"That's an excellent idea, Mr. Rayus. Being that you're the Principal you could
keep track of the big picture while I focus in on the details. Also, if I need help
after I get into it, say, for instance, ..., ahh, ..., if I need to fix one of the really
big wheels inside the 'Pattern Maker,' so the wheel runs true, ..., ah~er, ..., you
know, if I have to make it perfectly round, so it doesn't wobble or make funny
noises. I could get hold of it inside at the center and you could hold on to the edge
from the outside." Shaping the air with his hands to show his imagination, he tells
Mr. Rayus, "Yes'sir, Mr. Rayus, that would be some large scale fixing and you
could come in handy at just the right moment; that is, when I need to get a good
grasp on a wheel that's too big for me to get my hands completely around. Also,
I could use your help to turn it once around, so the pattern that this makes may
be figured out. I believe I could make you feel useful inside the 'Pattern Maker,'
having a purpose and not just a stand about; ..., there now, watching in silence."
"Whoa, .... You are really beginning to amaze me, Mr. Fixit; it feels like you are
able to read my mind. .... I have thought many times that, since I am now here,
I might as well be useful." But now, Mr. Rayus looks down and, then, outside
and, with a hushed tone, he asks of Mr. Fixit, "Please, give a kind favor and
keep this under your hat, but, every so often, when I am at a big school meet-
ing, I sense that a few of the directors of education imagine that I am useless."
Looking again at Mr. Fixit, Mr. Rayus continues to give his concerns, "As the
rumour goes, some have said that I tend to mumble, or, that I have a far away
look in my eyes; or, as an old saying goes, 'He has his head in the clouds.'"
