Dictionary Introduction
_____________________________________
To sum, a word is a sound that a person makes in order to "make sense."
_____________________________________
In order for words to do the work
that they are designed to do,
letters must do the job that they are
eligible for, and capable of doing.
_____________________________________
'Sound and "Sense"' is the result of an empirical study of the
information that is found in dictionaries. The body of an ordinary
dictionary is a list of words set down in alphabetical order.
After each word is a phonetic translation where the pronounciation
rule is given. This is a graphic description of the word sound if the
word is heard and designates the progression of the elemental sounds
which a speaker must make for the sound pattern to be recognized as an
appropriate enunciation of this particular word. When the pronounciation
rule is followed correctly, the resulting utterance is an expression of
proper diction. Specifically, in order to pronounce this word (as the
word is either imaginitively formulated, or, heard in normal usage)
speak as this sound pattern is "intoned," and, then, the word will
have been spoken in accordance with proper diction.
